Adding an IMAP email account to an email client can be slightly different based on the email client you are using. Below are the step-by-step instructions for adding an IMAP email account to Outlook, Windows Mail, Em Client, and Thunderbird.
Note: In all email clients, you will need to have the following information before starting the setup process:
- Your email address
- Password for your email account
- Incoming mail server (IMAP): mail.yourdomain.co.za (replace yourdomain.co.za with your actual domain)
- Outgoing mail server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.co.za (replace yourdomain.co.za with your actual domain)
- Incoming mail port: 993
- Outgoing mail port: 465
Adding an IMAP email account to Outlook
- Open Outlook and click on the “File” tab in the upper-left corner.
- Click on “Add Account” in the right-hand pane.
- Select “Manual setup or additional server types” and click “Next.”
- Select “POP or IMAP” and click “Next.”
- Enter your name, email address, and password in the fields provided.
- Select “IMAP” as the account type.
- In the “Incoming mail server” field, enter “mail.yourdomain.co.za”.
- In the “Outgoing mail server” field, enter “mail.yourdomain.co.za”.
- Enter your full email address in the “User Name” field.
- Enter your password in the “Password” field.
- Click on the “More Settings” button.
- Go to the “Outgoing Server” tab and check the box that says “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”.
- Go to the “Advanced” tab and enter the following information:
- Incoming server (IMAP): 993
- Use the following type of encrypted connection: SSL
- Outgoing server (SMTP): 465
- Use the following type of encrypted connection: SSL
- Click “OK” and then click “Next” to test your account settings.
- If everything is working correctly, you should see a “Congratulations!” message. Click “Finish” to complete the setup.
Adding an IMAP email account to Windows Mail
- Open Windows Mail and click on “Add Account” in the left-hand pane.
- Select “Advanced Setup” and click “Internet email.”
- Enter your email address, password, and display name in the fields provided.
- In the “Incoming email server” field, enter “mail.yourdomain.co.za”.
- In the “Account type” field, select “IMAP4”.
- In the “Outgoing (SMTP) email server” field, enter “mail.yourdomain.co.za”.
- Click on the “Advanced mailbox settings” link.
- Enter the following information in the fields provided:
- Incoming server (IMAP): 993
- This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL): Checked
- Outgoing server (SMTP): 465
- This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL): Checked
- Click “Sign in” to test your account settings.
- If everything is working correctly, you should see a “Your account was added successfully” message. Click “Done” to complete the setup.
Adding an IMAP email account to eM Client
- Open eM Client and click on “Menu” in the upper-left corner.
- Select “Tools” and then “Accounts” from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the “New account” button in the lower-left corner.
- Enter your email address and password in the fields provided.
- Select “IMAP” as the account type.
- In the “Mail” tab, enter the following information:
- Incoming mail server: mail.yourdomain.co.za
- Incoming port: 993
- Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy): Checked
- In the “SMTP” tab, enter the following information:
- Outgoing mail server: mail.yourdomain.co.za
- Outgoing port: 465
- Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy): Checked
- Server requires authentication: Checked
- Click on the “Finish” button to complete the setup.
- In the “Mail” tab, enter the following information:
- Incoming mail server: mail.yourdomain.co.za
- Incoming port: 993
- Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy): Checked
- In the “SMTP” tab, enter the following information:
- Outgoing mail server: mail.yourdomain.co.za
- Outgoing port: 465
- Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy): Checked
- Server requires authentication: Checked
- Click on the “Finish” button to complete the setup.
Adding an IMAP email account to Thunderbird
- Open Thunderbird and click on “Menu” in the upper-right corner.
- Select “Options” and then “Account Settings” from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the “Account Actions” button in the lower-left corner and select “Add Mail Account.”
- Enter your name, email address, and password in the fields provided.
- Click on the “Configure manually” button.
- Enter the following information:
- Incoming: IMAP
- Server hostname: mail.yourdomain.co.za
- Port: 993
- SSL: SSL/TLS
- Authentication: Normal password
- Outgoing: SMTP
- Server hostname: mail.yourdomain.co.za
- Port: 465
- SSL: SSL/TLS
- Authentication: Normal password
- Click on the “Re-test” button to test your account settings.
- If everything is working correctly, you should see a “Success!” message. Click on the “Done” button to complete the setup.
